What is khark island?

Khark Island, also known as Kharg Island, is a small island located in the Persian Gulf, just off the southern coast of Iran. It is the largest island in the Persian Gulf, with a total area of approximately 42 square kilometers.

Khark Island is an important strategic location for Iran due to its proximity to the Strait of Hormuz, which is a key shipping lane for oil exports from the Persian Gulf to the rest of the world. The island is home to Iran's largest oil export terminal, which handles around 90% of Iran's oil exports.

The island has a population of around 10,000 people, most of whom are employed in the oil and gas industry. The island's infrastructure includes an airport, a port, and several oil storage tanks.

Despite its economic importance, Khark Island has been the site of several military and political conflicts over the years. During the Iran-Iraq War in the 1980s, the island was attacked by Iraqi forces and suffered significant damage. In recent years, tensions between Iran and the United States have led to increased security concerns around the island.
